The African National Congress (ANC) has resolved to establish a service delivery "war room" within the Office of the Secretary General to evaluate the performance of its public representatives.
The party said this is not an election gimmick, but a response to the country’s growing challenges.
Sunday marks the second day of the ANC’s National Lekgotla at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, where the party’s leaders are strategising on a plan of action for government.
As the country’s largest political party, the ANC has representation in all three spheres of government. The party noted a disconnect between the spheres that has led to service delivery challenges.
ANC Deputy President Paul Mashatile said the service delivery war room will be able to coordinate service delivery responses from its members at different levels of government.
“We’ll replicate this process throughout the country so that people who are given this responsibility full-time [can] ensure they monitor implementation and ensure there is ongoing evaluation, monitoring, and then interventions. So that if there is a problem with the sewer in a particular area, it must not take long for it to be fixed.”
Mashatile has denied that the war room is a replica of government functions, as a Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation already exists.
