The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature has echoed a call by Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini for the province to be renamed KwaZulu.
The King made the call while addressing the annual commemoration of the Battle of Isandlwane in Nquthu last week. The IFP said it has been advocating for a renaming of the province for years.
Party national chairperson Blessed Gwala stated that the current name remains a compromise that fails to fully reflect the reality of the region.
“The IFP consistently and firmly advocated for the recognition of KwaZulu in acknowledgement of the Zulu Kingdom and its profound historical, cultural, and political significance. The current name remains a compromise that failed to fully reflect this reality.”
Gwala said the renaming will address the distortion of history and provide a path toward further restoration.
“We further believe that His Majesty’s call opens the door to addressing other long-standing historical distortions," Gwala added.
