Retired Judge Bernard Ngoepe has been appointed to head up a board of inquiry into allegations related to Iran’s involvement in a recent naval exercise.

Last month, reports emerged of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s orders being ignored regarding the country’s involvement. Ramaphosa had reportedly ordered that Iran be relegated to observer status in the exercise "Will for Peace".

Now, Defence Minister Angie Motshekga has appointed a board to establish all the facts. The department’s Siphiwe Dlamini stated, "The following have been nominated to form the board: Chairperson of the board Judge B.M. Ngoepe; members Judge M.M. Leeuw, Judge C. Satchwell, and Rear Admiral (JG) (rtd) P.T. Duze."
