The City of Cape Town has allocated more than R100 million to build a wall on the N2.

Mayor Geordin Hill Lewis announced during his council speech on Thursday that the city's urban mobility budget for the barrier will be increased by seven million rand this year.

The mayor says a further R108m will be allocated for the project in the 2027 financial year to cover the bulk of the construction.

"This project will not only repair safety barriers and install new ones, it will also bring various other safety improvements for adjacent communities, including pedestrian crossings, improved lighting, safety barriers for recreational spaces, safer grazing practices for livestock, and reduced spaces for illegal dumping."

The mayor says metro police have assisted close to 3,000 motorists along the N2 between Langa and Firgrove since September 2024.

But it's not fair to Cape Town residents that a small number of criminal elements impact the safety of thousands of N2 road users.

"The N2 edge project will improve safety alongside the city's beefed-up highway patrol unit with 45 new metro cops deployed to the N2 late last year, backed by cctv cameras and other safety technology."
