The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has ordered an urgent investigation into a devastating collision that claimed the lives of six family members on the N2 highway.
The incident occurred on Friday night near Mtubatuba when a truck collided with an Opel Corsa. The passenger vehicle was carrying seven occupants at the time of the impact.
Emergency services reported a harrowing scene, with five individuals—including a six-year-old child—pronounced dead on impact. Two survivors were initially rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
However, officials confirmed that one of the injured succumbed to their wounds on Saturday night, bringing the total death toll to six. The sole remaining survivor is currently fighting for their life in critical condition.
KZN Transport spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya stated that the department is prioritising the investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.
As part of the provincial government’s response, Transport MEC Siboniso Duma is scheduled to visit the bereaved family on Sunday. The visit aims to provide support and convey formal condolences following the tragic loss of nearly an entire household.
