Apex Publishing Enterprises, the company that owns the Financial Mail, is expanding its business and financial journalism offering by acquiring two fast-growing digital news platforms: Miningmx and Currency News.
The move brings two respected specialist newsrooms into the Financial Mail fold at a time when media companies are under growing pressure to grow their audiences and revenues, while most importantly retaining its credibility and independence.
Miningmx is founded and led by veteran mining journalist David McKay, offering in-depth reporting and analysis on Africa’s mining industry.
Currency News, which launched in 2024, is a fully digital platform covering a wide range of topics, including investing, finance, politics, the economy, energy and ESG issues. Respected journalist Rob Rose is a co-founder of Currency News.
Speaking to Stephen Grootes on The Money Show, Rose says by bringing the Financial Mail, Miningmx and Currency News under one roof, Apex aims to deepen and sharpen its coverage of finance, mining and the broader economy.
"It allows you to punch above your weight. The power of a whole lot of media brands coming together, you can do bigger things I hope."
- Rob Rose, co-founder - Currency News
"It's a cultural fit. We work well together, and fundamentally the vision Apex had was to build excellence in journalism. Excellence in business journalism. I think it's a difficult world. Costs have been cut dramatically and advertising spend has been reduced. So if you have somebody that believes in funding this vision, putting it together and take it to the next level, then it's a compelling, strategic fit."
