Mining isn’t a sunset industry, says Minerals Council CEO

The upcoming Mining Indaba in Cape Town will bring together industry leaders from across Africa and the globe to discuss investment opportunities, technological innovation, and energy security. 

South Africa’s own mining sector is at a pivotal moment, with questions around energy, investment, and illegal mining taking centre stage ahead of the gathering later this month.

Mzila Mthenjane, CEO of the Minerals Council South Africa says there is a misconception that mining is a 'sunset' industry.

"South Africa remains well-endowed with several minerals, some of which we're now calling critical minerals."

Mthenjane suggests perhaps the reason behind the misconception is due to the lack of exploration in South Africa for some time.

"We've gone through a long period of time in South Africa without seeing the level of exploration  that we've seen in the past."

The sector is closely watching how rising electricity costs and policy decisions will shape competitiveness this year.

"It's obviously topical right now given the need to plug the gap for supply of these minerals," says Mthenjane. Adding that affordable energy is critical for the effective and efficient functioning of any economy."
