The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is urging social grant recipients who've not yet reviewed their beneficiary status to do so or risk having their grants suspended.

The agency's CEO, Themba Matlou, briefed the media on Thursday on initiatives the agency has taken to improve social grants systems.

Matlou said the review process is a critical step in ensuring that public funds reach those who need them most.

He added that the process also helps reduce fraud and the misuse of public funds.

Matlou said the agency remains committed to protecting the rights and dignity of all beneficiaries, and to ensure that no qualifying individual is unfairly disadvantaged.

He explained that grants aren’t cancelled solely based on these checks, adding that reviews are necessary to keep beneficiary records accurate and up-to-date.

"It is only if they fail to conduct the review within the legislated time period that their grant will be suspended, and eventually lapsed if they do not come forward for a review after suspension."

He's emphasised that beneficiaries should cooperate with the review process when requested.
