Joburg firefighters damping down CBD building after putting out blaze

Johannesburg firefighters are conducting damping down operations at a building in the city’s CBD on Friday morning.

This, after the ground floor of the building caught alight on corner Bree and Harrison Streets in the early hours.

It’s understood that the building is used as both a residential and commercial space.

The fire was successfully extinguished but firefighters remain on the scene to prevent any reignition.

No injuries have been reported.

Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson Xolile Khumalo said an investigation into the cause of the blaze is underway.

“A large transformer located on ground floor is suspected to be the cause. The exact cause will be confirmed following a full investigation once all emergency operations have been completed. No injuries have been reported. All transformer-related inquiries will be handled by City Power.”
