The Gauteng Transport department said that scholar transport operators must obtain school authorisation letters, ensure vehicles are roadworthy, and have formal contracts with parents or guardians.

MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela said that the meeting aimed to emphasize learner safety and ensure compliance among transport operators.

She added that since last year, over 1,500 operators have applied for licenses, with more than 500 already approved and over 1,000 still in the finalisation process.

Diale-Tlabela also urged operators facing challenges with their applications to return to the department for assistance, stressing that learner safety cannot be compromised.
