Investigations are underway after two separate shooting incidents, which left five people dead and several others injured in Cape Town on Saturday morning.

In Gugulethu, three men aged 24, 29 and 40 were killed when unknown gunmen opened fire on a group socialising in a backyard.

Authorities said that a fourth victim survived and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Police Spokesperson André Traut said that they believe the victims may have been targeted.

“In a separate incident in Philippi East, two people were shot and killed in what is believed to be a robbery. SAPS [South African Police Service] strongly condemns these senseless acts of violence and is actively pursuing those responsible. Anyone information is urged to come forward by contacting CrimeStop.”
