For many South Africans navigating the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) can be frustrating.
702 presenter Clement Manyathela decided to help a listener get his UIF payout so that others may possibly learn from his experience.
Mr Gordon who'd been in the corporate environment for over 40 years, retired in July 2024 and applied for UIF a month later.
"I was so happy because I received a case number, I received, via SMS a note saying that my case has been sent for assessment... For the next two-to-three-months I received nothing. So I thought ok, these guys must be busy and you know I'm living off my savings so no rush. I'll wait my turn.
"And then, come month 12, I was stressing a bit and I chatted to a friend at the gym who advised me to call Radio 702 and maybe they can help."
So in August 2025, a full year after he did his UIF application, he called the station and the producers put him in touch with UIF practitioner, Sindiswa Mbonambi.
She says when they first spoke, she could hear how upset Mr Gordon was. "And I assured him that he is not going to walk the journey alone."
She says she quickly determined that the online platform he used, uFiling - was no longer in use.
Then we submitted all the documents with proof that everything necessary was submitted in time.
He was approved and he was paid, three months after she submitted on the new platform, so in 2025 he was fully paid.
Mr Gordon says he feels wonderful and is grateful for the help.
"I think it's important for listeners to keep track of their engagements with the UIF. Keep the reference number, keep the name of the person you spoke to, write down the feedback that you get. And all of that information was very helpful to Sindiswa."
He says he's been doing a lot of maintenance around the house and is now looking for a short-term contract in IT.
