Angela Blackwell and her beloved pup Jaydee have become the first blind person and guide dog pair to trek the 65km Pondo trail over four days.

Recounting the adventure, Blackwell said the experience was a testament to her confidence and trust not only in her guide dog, guide but also in herself.

She added that working with Jaydee restored her self-confidence and independence, inspiring her to help others who have lost their sight.

“My confidence has shifted significantly from where it was. I was at a very low point in my life some years ago and Jaydee was that turning point.

“I just had such a wonderful experience. One of my highlights was on day two… it was hot, it was dusty, and I just couldn’t believe it that my dog and I had walked 20 km.”

The journey was a win for the South African Guide Dogs Association, which the pair raised over R300,000 for through their Pause on the Path campaign.

The campaign was also aimed at raising awareness about the essential work the association does for those who need it.

“My message to everyone out there is that we can all do hard things,” she said.
