ActionSA’s newly announced mayoral candidate, Herman Mashaba, says he has unfinished business with the city.

Mashaba served as Johannesburg mayor between 2016 and 2019.

On Saturday, at the Orlando Community Hall in Soweto, ActionSA announced Mashaba will be seeking the mayoral chains again in the upcoming local government elections.

For most parts of 2025, Mashaba downplayed the possibility of him running for mayor again, saying he was too old.

However, following failed discussions with former Democratic Alliance (DA) parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko, Mashaba threw himself back into the ring.

Mashaba said he already has a proven track record of turning Johannesburg around.

“The contrast in this election is simple. Others will talk and make empty promises without a plan. We are going to demonstrate our proven track record of what has already been delivered, and what more is coming. At the heart of this campaign and our offer to residents is a credible plan.”

So far, the battle to become Johannesburg’s number one citizen is between Mashaba, Helen Zille of the DA and Kenny Kunene of the Patriotic Alliance (PA), with other parties still yet to announce their mayoral candidates.
