Ramaphosa: Probe into SA men lured to Russia-Ukraine war continues

President Cyril Ramaphosa reiterated that the investigation into the circumstances that led to 17 men being lured to Russia under the guise of employment is continuing.

Four of the men returned from Russia last week after the government’s intervention.

The group left South Africa believing they would be employed in high-paying jobs, only to find they would be put on the frontlines of the Russia-Ukraine war.

According to their spokesperson, some have suffered physical injuries while the rest have suffered emotional stress.

Ramaphosa welcomed the group, who have since returned and said efforts to assist the 13 remaining men are ongoing.

The president's spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, said Ramaphosa thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for his cooperation in the rescue mission.

Regarding the Russian leader, Magwenya said: "Who responded positively to his call to support of the process of returning the men home. President Putin had pledged his support during a telephone call with President Ramaphosa that was held earlier this month."
