Godongwana defends fuel levy hike

Motorists will have to dig a little deeper in their pockets to keep their cars on the road following the government’s decision to raise the fuel levy.
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced during his budget speech on Wednesday that the fuel levy will increase by 9 cents per litre for petrol and 8 cents per litre for diesel.

The fuel levy, which helps fund the Road Accident Fund, was also raised last year after being frozen for the two previous financial years.
Godongwana explained that the adjustments to the fuel levy are in line with inflation.
"The general fuel levy will go up by 9 cents per litre for petrol and 8 cents per litre for diesel. The carbon fuel levy will go up by 5 cents per litre for petrol and 6 cents for diesel. The Road Accident Fund levy will increase by 7 cents per litre."
