A historic clash looms between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, a fixture that could inadvertently favour Mamelodi Sundowns on the Betway Premiership log should the Amakhosi upset their neighbours.
Both Chiefs and Pirates are entering the derby in a quest for redemption following recent setbacks. The Buccaneers are reeling from a loss to Casric Stars, while the Chiefs are looking to bounce back after falling to Stellenbosch FC.
Pirates remain on a mission to claim this season's championship. However, they have struggled to maintain consistency. These dropped points have allowed the defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, to reclaim their position at the summit of the log.
The Glamour Boys are currently fourth on the log with 30 points. After a midweek defeat to the Maroon Machine (Stellenbosch FC) and a failure to secure a spot in the Nedbank Cup Last 16, pressure is mounting.
The technical team faces the daunting task of restoring the club’s pride this Saturday at FNB Stadium.
Adding a layer of intrigue to the rivalry is the presence of a "hero" waiting in the wings.
Five-time back-to-back Premiership champion coach Pitso Mosimane has been watching the league closely during his current period without a club.
Rumours have persistently linked the two-time CAF Champions League winner with a return to either Sundowns or Kaizer Chiefs.
Interestingly, Orlando Pirates have recently been added to that list as the season enters its final three months. With the Soweto Derby on the horizon, the result may well provide an indication of whether a change in the dugout is imminent.
