Nigerian pastor John Anosike has been identified as the bidder linked to the auction of Cape Town’s Good Hope Centre, where a bid of R153 million was placed.

The City of Cape Town has since said no bids have yet been accepted and that a post-auction audit is underway to verify bidders’ tax, ownership, risk and financial compliance status.

The audit comes as attention turns to who John Anosike is and the church he leads.

Leader of Spirit Revelation Ecclesia

John Anosike is the leader of the End Times Charismatic Church Spirit Revelation Ecclesia.

The church appears to have an international footprint, with followers contributing financially through several programmes run by the ministry.

One of these initiatives is called ‘First Fruit’, a donation programme that directs contributions to a bank account in Anosike’s personal name.

“There’s no attempt to hide this,” journalist Rebecca Davis said in an interview on CapeTalk.

“It’s not in the name of an organisation; it’s not in the name of the church. It is simply in the name of Pastor John himself.”

Global donations linked to church programmes

Spirit Revelation Ecclesia also runs a fundraising initiative known as the ‘Good Hope Vow’, which appears to be aimed at raising funds to buy the Good Hope Centre.

According to Davis, the initiative allows donations in rands and US dollars, with contributions coming from followers around the world.

Donations from the United States appear to be processed through a Florida-based company called Beugold Crystal Corporation, which also sells the pastor’s books in the US and Poland.

Comments linked to the crowdfunding initiative suggest supporters from multiple countries have contributed.

Broadcast presence and international following

John Anosike’s church appears to have a broad audience, partly due to broadcast exposure.

Some of the pastor’s services are carried on DStv channels, which may explain the church’s wide reach and international donor base.

Davis said the church appears to operate within a global financial network involving donations and fundraising initiatives linked to the ministry.

South African ID number

Anosike is understood to have a South African ID number, possibly issued around 2016, although that has not been confirmed.

However, his wife, who is also a co-pastor in the church, does not appear to have a South African ID number.

“How they acquired residency permission, the wife in particular, is unclear,” Davis said.

Questions over the Good Hope Centre bid

The identity of the bidder has raised questions about the future of the Good Hope Centre, one of Cape Town’s most recognisable buildings.

When the City of Cape Town announced the auction, it indicated the building would likely continue as a mixed-use facility, including commercial activity.

However, the church could potentially use the venue as a large place of worship.

The building’s large dome structure has already drawn attention within the church.

The ministry currently refers to its existing premises as the ‘Dome of Truth’, and the Good Hope Centre’s structure could serve as a new ‘prayer dome’ for congregants.

For now, the City says the post-auction audit will determine whether any bids, including the one linked to Anosike, meet the required compliance standards.
