Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said he will appeal a finding that he breached the Provincial Legislature’s code of conduct.

This comes after the Legislature adopted a conduct committee report that found that Winde failed to disclose sponsored travel to the United States (US) in the official Register of Members’ Interests.

The trip was to attend New York Climate Week in 2024.

However, the premier’s office insists the visit was properly declared in the annual report.

Premier spokesperson Regan Thaw said Winde did not receive any gift or sponsorship in his personal capacity.

Thaw said the trip was co-funded by the Under2 Coalition, a global climate body where Winde serves as co-chair representing Africa.

However, the African National Congress (ANC) in the Provincial Legislature has raised concerns, saying the matter is serious, particularly as it involves the premier, who is expected to uphold the highest standards of integrity and ethical governance.

"The ANC calls on all members of the House, including the Democratic Alliance, to vote in favour of the report and to re-affirm that no one is above the rules of this Legislature."

The party maintained that failing to declare sponsored trips undermines transparency and public accountability in a constitutional democracy.
