State opposes bail for Mkhwanazi and co-accused in Ekurhuleni corruption case
Mkhwanazi and Lerutla are facing Schedule 5 charges that include fraud, corruption and defeating the ends of justice following their arrests at the weekend.
This relates to offences allegedly committed in 2019, where Lerutla had been arrested for speeding.
The State alleged that the court appearance was on the same day as a job interview.
He opted to attend the interview, and the two orchestrated an elaborate identity switch in which a different person appeared in the Boksburg Magistrates Court on his behalf, at a cost of R400,000.
The impersonator completed diversion documents using Lerutla’s details.
The State is expected to oppose bail.
Mkhwanazi has yet to complete his evidence at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where he faces serious allegations. He has yet to face arrest regarding those allegations.
