The Democratic Alliance (DA) believes Johannesburg’s current administration has utterly failed to keep the city’s roads free of potholes.

Speaking to supporters at the Johannesburg City Hall on Saturday, the DA’s mayoral candidate, Helen Zille, outlined her key priorities for the city.

A major focus is repairing the roads, which she says the current leadership has completely neglected.

She added that repairing potholes isn’t rocket science.

“We will fix the roads that keep Joburg moving and we won’t call a ribbon cutting [ceremony] every time we fix potholes because they will be fixed every day. At the end of our tenure, we will be able to fix potholes within 72 hours of reporting them.”

Zille said addressing the dysfunctional traffic lights crisis is also on her list of priorities.

“We will ensure that at least 95% of traffic lights work at any time. We will restore order to our intersections. Driving through Johannesburg’s intersections is an absolute nightmare and we will use tamper-proof technology to help us.”
