South African competitive bodybuilder and fitness athlete Lynel Barnard has officially cemented her place in international sporting history.
After nearly a decade away from the competitive stage, Barnard completed a high-profile comeback in 2025, culminating in a double-gold victory at the United World Sports & Fitness Federation (UWSFF) World Championships in Thailand.
Representing South Africa on the world stage, Barnard dominated her competition to secure top honours in two premier categories: Sports Model and Fitness Bikini over 171m. The victory was the result of an intense period of physical and mental preparation that began at the start of 2025.
Barnard’s success wasn’t just physical; it was a testament to community support. As a self-funded athlete, she relied on raffle fundraisers and local prizes to finance her trip to Thailand. The reality of the journey only truly settled in on the morning of her flight.
"Standing at the airport with my bags checked in, waiting to board the plane with the team, I realised: the dream was actually happening."

The road to Thailand began on March 14, 2025, at the ABDN Classic. What was intended to be a simple "warm-up" show turned into a career-defining moment when Barnard won both the Fitness Bikini category and the Overall title. This victory reignited her competitive fire and shifted her focus toward international qualifiers.
"Initially, it was just meant to be a warm-up show before my main focus, the Shaye Best Classics. My goal was simply to step on stage again and bring my best package. Winning the Fitness Bikini category and the Overall at ABDN completely reignited the fire."
Following her local dominance, the Shaye Best Classics served as the official qualifier for the UWSFF World Championships. Barnard’s ambitions quickly pivoted from local competition to proving her speed and form against the best in the world.

Barnard’s athletic journey began as a teenager when she retired from competitive dancing and began training at Virgin Active Tygervalley. Fascinated by the athletes she saw at local shows, she committed to the stage at age 21. After a nine-year hiatus, her return in 2025 proved that experience and "mental maturity" are invaluable assets in the sport.
"My journey into bodybuilding started when I was around 16 or 17 years old... At the age of 21 I finally decided to commit to stepping on stage for the first time. That decision opened the door to a journey that would challenge me physically and mentally in ways I never imagined."

Reflecting on her double-gold achievement, Barnard tells Eyewitness News that bodybuilding has taught her lessons that extend far beyond the stage.
Her primary philosophy is to remain grounded regardless of the outcome, a mindset that helped her navigate the unpredictable nature of international judging.
"Be humble in victory and graceful in defeat. Anything can change when you step onto the international stage. Earlier in South Africa, I placed third in Sport Model, but at Worlds, I placed first. That taught me that if you want something badly enough and you are willing to do the work, amazing things can happen."
She tells Eyewitness News that having a coach for accountability is essential, especially when "your own mind starts playing tricks on you during prep." Barnard believes that her growth as an athlete is ongoing and that there is always room for further improvement.
