Scenes of chaos erupted in Elsies River on Wednesday, as Western Cape police confirmed officers in the area responded to a fatal incident in Halt Street. 

Police spokesperson Ndakhe Gwala said an adult woman was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross the road. 

Gwala said shortly after the crash, the vehicle involved in the collision was set alight by unknown bystanders. 

A video taken of the incident shows a stationary minibus taxi up in flames in the middle of the road. 

"Police registered a case of culpable homicide for further investigation. The vehicle that was involved in the accident was set alight by unknown bystanders. The owner of the motor vehicle has not opened a case yet," Gwala said.
