The Democratic Alliance (DA) claims to have uncovered "explosive new information" about the departure of the Gauteng Health Department’s Chief Financial Officer Lerato Madyo, who was facing disciplinary charges concerning fraudulent Tembisa Hospital contracts flagged by murdered whistleblower Babita Deokaran.
DA Gauteng Health Shadow MEC, Dr Jack Bloom, says it appears Madyo did not just resign, but actually got a "sweetheart deal" – including a payout of her contract and her pension, despite having 13 misconduct charges pending against her.
"To me it looks like a golden handshake, it's hush money in fact... I think it's a cover-up."
Bloom says the Health Department's claim of a confidentiality clause is highly irregular.
"This was public money that she was paid, and we're going to challenge it in various ways... first of all we want to see this agreement.
He says the disciplinary charges against Madyo should also have been finalised before she left.
"I reckon she would have been found guilty, then she would have gone off without benefits... the whole thing stinks to high heaven."
