As South Africa marks the 65th anniversary of the Sharpeville massacre, the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation will honour the 69 people killed when police opened fire on protesters on 21 March 1960.

The commemoration, held at the Phelindaba Cemetery in the Sharpeville Human Rights Precinct, will also launch anti-racism week 2026.

Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamaloko Kubayi is expected to deliver the keynote address.

Her spokesperson, Terrence Manase said that the programme will include a quiet march retracing the route of the 1960 protest.

"The minister will carry a message aimed at inspiring South Africans to honour the sacrifices of the past by recommitting to the values of the constitution and actively working together to build a united, non-racial, and democratic society.”
