The Springbok Sevens have been crowned the 2025/26 World Sevens Series champions after a dramatic final day at the HSBC SVNS New York.
The Blitzboks’ path to the podium was a test of resilience. After defeating New Zealand and France, they suffered a narrow loss to Australia to finish second in Pool A.
However, they bounced back in the knockout stages, edging Argentina 14-5 in the semi-finals to set up a high-stakes showdown against title contenders, Fiji.
By winning the New York title, South Africa successfully pipped Fiji in both the tournament standings and the overall series race.
Head coach Philip Snyman, speaking from the Sports Illustrated Stadium on Sunday, admitted to an overwhelming sense of pride in his team’s "never-say-die" attitude.
“This was special, not because of the execution of play, but the heart and intensity to play for each other that was shown out there,” said Snyman. “They showed what Springbok Sevens stand for and played for that jersey; as a coach, you cannot be prouder of such an effort.”
Snyman highlighted the team’s defensive grit as the deciding factor, particularly in the dying moments of the final.

“The defensive effort was something else from minute one until the last play. In the final sequence, Fiji created an overlap here and there, but the guys never gave up. How some of those players got into those defensive positions to cover, I don’t know. But I do know that drive comes from within.”
The coach praised the squad for embracing his vision, which involved integrating new talent alongside established veterans.
“The senior players bought in and started to contribute, and every new player coming in had the backing and support of the senior guys. That made it possible to continue with the plan,” Snyman noted. He warned, however, that the work is not over: “We are not done yet. We will have a rest now but will come back as determined for the three tournaments of the World Championship.”
For Blitzbok captain Impi Visser, the victory was made sweeter by a personal milestone. Celebrating his 50th World Series tournament appearance, Visser finished the match with blood streaming from his face, a testament to the physicality of the final.
“We gave them a bit too much possession, which is what Fiji thrives on, but our defence won the day,” Visser said. “We did not play our best rugby of the tournament in the final, but our defence was outstanding. To win the tournament and the series during your 50th is a nice combination of achievements. It makes the hard work and sacrifices worth it.”
