The case of alleged crime boss Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala took an unexpected turn in the Johannesburg High Court on Wednesday.
Matlala’s lawyer told the court that her client wants to be tried separately, claiming there is no case against him.
Advocate Annelie van der Heever informed the court that she intends to bring an application to separate her client’s matter from the other co-accused.
Matlala and four co-accused are facing 25 charges, including 11 of attempted murder.

Van der Heever said the evidence against her client is flawed and that Matlala is linked to the case by only three statements from two witnesses.
"My client believes it’s in the interest of justice to cut through the chase. We run the case with the two witnesses that are pertinent, made very clear because we believe it is inadmissible evidence. The opinion of some police that it was a hit is impermissible and inadmissible; that is what my instructions are at this point."
