KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi confirmed that he did not have top security clearance.
He said the reason he did not have it was because of State Security and the police's Crime Intelligence Unit, which had stalled the process since 2018, when his last certificate expired.
Mkhwanazi was responding to Paul O'Sullivan’s testimony during his evidence, where the investigator said Mkhwanazi’s clearance had not been issued.

Mkhwanazi told the parliamentary ad hoc committee investigating police corruption on Wednesday that he had been flagged by Crime Intelligence after being incorrectly implicated in wrongdoing by police watchdog, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
“There is Foster, who is an IPID person in KZN, who said to State Security at the time that there is a case of a hit squad that happened in 2013 that I’m implicated in. Now, I’ve never worked in KZN in 2013, I worked in Pretoria. So, that’s the reason SSA did not issue another clearance at the time.”
