Alleged crime boss Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala is expected back in the Johannesburg High Court for his attempted murder case on Wednesday morning.

Matlala, his wife, Tsakane, and their three co-accused are facing 25 charges, including 11 counts of attempted murder.

The charges relate to three separate shooting incidents allegedly carried out between August 2022 and January 2024.

The case was set down for a pre-trial hearing, but the defence requested a postponement, arguing they have not yet received all relevant documents and evidence from the state.

On Wednesday, the court is expected to hear if charges against one of the accused, 23-year-old Nthabiseng Nzama, will be dropped after her legal team stopped her pre-trial process, opting to make representations to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to have the charges against her dropped.

At the time, her attorney argued that the State’s case was weak and unlikely to succeed.

Nzama is accused of facilitating financial transactions linked to alleged criminal proceeds, including a failed hit on socialite Tebogo Thobejane.

In February, senior State prosecutor Elize Le Roux denied allegations that the State was deliberately delaying the matter.

This, after the defence claimed it had not received all documents related to the charges and evidence against their clients.

Matlala, and two co-accused, Tiego Floyd Mabusela and Musa Kekana, are currently behind bars, while Tsakane and Nzama are out on bail.
