Some good news for Knysna residents struggling with municipal debt.

The Garden Route town's Council has approved a new incentive to allow qualifying households to have up to 50 percent of their arrears written off.

The municipality says residents who pay half of what they owe by the 30th of June will see the remaining balance cleared in full.

The relief applies to residential customers with debt dating back to June last year that was still outstanding at the start of this year.

Knysna Mayor Thando Matika said that the revised policy is aimed at giving families a fresh start and easing ongoing financial pressure.

Residents can take advantage of the offer through a once-off payment or a short-term payment arrangement, depending on their circumstances.

Municipal officials said that the initiative is about supporting households while encouraging responsible payment going forward.

Residents are urged to contact municipal offices in Knysna and Sedgefield as soon as possible to apply.
