The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities has raised concerns over the continued challenges women face in accessing justice in South Africa.
It warns that this continues to limit their economic participation.
The department said that despite the country’s advanced legal framework many women especially in rural and township areas struggle with high legal costs, limited awareness, and social challenges - that prevent them from exercising their basic rights.
Spokesperson Cassius Selala said that improving access to justice is vital for achieving true economic inclusion and gender fairness.
"The ability of women to access justice through courts, legal aid, and protection mechanisms is fundamental to unlocking economic opportunities. When women can claim their labour rights, secure property ownership, and challenge discrimination, they are better positioned to achieve financial independence and contribute to economic growth.”
