The South African Revenue Service (SARS) said that the appointment of Dr Ngobani Makhubu as its new commissioner marks a smooth, well-planned leadership transition, ensuring continuity and stability.

Makhubu, currently Deputy Commissioner for Taxpayer Engagement and Operations, made his first public appearance on Saturday after being appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday.

He will take over from outgoing commissioner Edward Kieswetter next month.

Sars said that the agency has gained strong momentum, recently collecting a record R2.01 trillion in revenue.

Makhubu pledged to build on Kieswetter’s legacy of stronger governance and to crack down on the illicit economy.
