Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has delivered the last budget of his administration, saying it delivered the biggest municipal infrastructure investments in the country.
The budget, referred to as the “City of Hope Budget”, will see a capital budget of more than R13 billion.
This is more than double the metro's R6 billion capital spending in its 2021/22 budget at the beginning of Hill-Lewis's term.
“As I am sure you know, we have taken on infrastructure projects of impressive, and you might even say daunting, scale in this term of office. Some of these projects are the largest of their kind ever undertaken by a city government in South Africa, and their completions span multiple years.”
Hill-Lewis also bragged about the budget compared to other large metros in the country.
“And as has been the case for each of the last few years, our capital budget remains higher than the three Gauteng metros combined.”
