The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating the death of a 16-year-old boy who was allegedly shot by a drunk police officer in Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg.
Thabani Mazibuko was shot on Saturday night near the local police station.
At the time, it’s understood that he was trying to intervene during the alleged assault of a friend.
Police, however, claim the teen and another person tried to rob the officer in question.
Gauteng police said one officer was shot and another stabbed during the incident, and that what they describe as a second suspect fled the scene.
Mazibuko’s family and eyewitnesses strongly deny the robbery claim. His loved ones said he was not capable of such an act.
IPID said several investigative steps have already been carried out.
“To date, we have reconstructed the crime scene, visited and engaged with the family and we are currently interviewing other witnesses,” said spokesperson Lizzy Shuping.
Meanwhile, Mazibuko’s death has sparked outrage in Diepsloot, with residents demonstrating outside the local police station at the weekend, demanding answers.
