Spanish officials have confirmed that its airspace has been closed to US planes involved in the war with Iran.

This was after Defence Minister Margarita Robles said the US couldn’t use its jointly operated military bases in the war.

“This was made perfectly clear to the American military and forces from the very beginning. Therefore, neither the bases are authorised, nor, of course, is the use of Spanish airspace authorised for any actions related to the war in Iran,” Robles told the media.

European countries are critical of the US and Israel’s war on Iran.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has been one of the most vocal, describing it as reckless and illegal.

President Donald Trump has threatened to cut trade with Madrid for denying the US use of Spain's bases in the war.

"Spain's an ally of all European nations in the EU and beyond and in NATO as well, so again this doesn't sit well,” said world news correspondent Adam Gilchrist.
