South Africa’s relationship with Japan is under renewed focus as geopolitical tensions intensify, with both countries seeking stronger cooperation on trade, energy and global stability.
Speaking on 702, Japan’s ambassador to South Africa, Shimizu Fumio, said the partnership has evolved beyond economics into broader political and strategic alignment.
Trade and investment remain central
Japan is one of South Africa’s top trading partners and a major investor, particularly in the automotive sector.
“Japan is now… South Africa’s fifth largest trade partner and seventh largest investor,” Fumio said.
He pointed to the strong presence of Japanese car manufacturers, including Toyota, with more than 200,000 vehicles produced locally.
Investment also spans infrastructure, communications and minerals.
Shared global outlook amid division
Fumio stressed that cooperation is increasingly important in a divided global landscape.
“The world should not be divided… [it] should be united and should cooperate,” he said.
Japan’s ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific’ vision, first outlined in 2016, promotes principles such as democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
He said South Africa shares these values, creating a basis for deeper collaboration beyond trade.
South Africa’s role in a shifting global order
Amid growing pressure from major powers like the United States, Japan views South Africa as an influential player rather than a small economy.
“South Africa is not a small country… [it is] influential in the global South,” Fumio said.
He emphasised the need for countries like South Africa and Japan to work together to uphold international rules during a period of global uncertainty.
Energy transition a key growth area
Looking ahead, Japan is targeting increased cooperation in energy, particularly around decarbonisation and climate change.
The two countries signed a memorandum of cooperation in November focused on carbon neutrality and the just energy transition.
Joint efforts include projects in energy and rail, supported by Japanese technology.
Middle East tensions dominate outlook
Japan sees the situation in the Middle East as the most urgent global issue, with efforts focused on de-escalation and maintaining stability.
Fumio highlighted recent diplomatic engagements, including talks with the United States and a joint statement with other countries urging Iran to ensure secure navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
“We need to cooperate… to de-escalate the situation,” he said.
Uncertain months ahead
With global instability persisting, Japan is positioning its relationship with South Africa as part of a broader strategy to maintain cooperation and stability.
The next few months are expected to remain volatile, with diplomacy and economic ties playing a critical role.
