The Archbishop of Cape Town, Thabo Makgoba, has raised concerns about the state of policing in South Africa.

He voiced his concerns during his midnight Easter sermon at St George's Cathedral in Cape Town over the weekend.

Several senior police officials, including generals, have been implicated in the Madlanga Commission, which is probing criminality and corruption within the South African Police Service.

The commission has heard allegations that some officers are in the pockets of criminal elements, with criminal syndicates reportedly infiltrating law enforcement and directing police operations.

Archbishop Makgoba said that the claims and counterclaims presented before the commission make it difficult for South Africans to judge which police leaders are honest and which are controlled by criminal syndicates.
