Suspended police sergeant Fannie Nkosi's attempt to apply for bail in the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court has failed.
Nkosi made his first court appearance on Tuesday on charges of theft, possession of ammunition and defeating the ends of justice.
Nkosi, who testified for several days before the Madlanga Commission, was arrested during a police raid at his home in Pretoria last week.

The theft charges are related to dockets and ammunition belonging to the state that were found in Nkosi's possession while he was on suspension and was required to hand in all state property.
His lawyers tried to argue for his bail hearing to go ahead, informing the court that Nkosi does not feel safe behind bars and hasn't had a meal since his arrest last week.
But Magistrate Renee Venter granted the state its application for the matter to be postponed to Monday for further investigation and bail application preparations.
Nkosi will remain behind bars.
