The appointment of Judge Aubrey Ledwaba as Gauteng Judge President now lies with President Cyril Ramaphosa after the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) recommended him for the post.

Ledwaba spent two hours in a gruelling interview on Tuesday as the only candidate vying for the position.

The legal fundi has been acting judge president since Dunstan Mlambo was appointed Deputy Chief Justice.

But his candidature has been marred in controversy following allegations of corruption against him at the Madlanga Commission.

The allegations that Ledwaba received a bride to award suspected crime boss Katiso "KT" Molefe bail followed him to his interview before the JSC.

However, this has not held water to stop his appointment.

On Tuesday, the JSC decided to recommend Ledwaba for the Gauteng top judge post after he denied any wrongdoing.

Judicial watchdog Judges Matter said the JSC addressed the allegations adequately.

“The issues that were raised were issues that I am aware of, and they were dealt with in detail. He was asked not only by Commissioner Ngcukaitobi about what had happened, but a number of other commissioners chimed in and wanted more details, firm denials on some issues.”

Tilley has highlighted that there was no formal complaint laid against Ledwaba with the JSC.
