The search for a man alleged to have gunned down three people in Rabie Ridge near Tembisa has come to an end.
The suspect apparently attempted to turn the gun on himself as police closed in on him on the N14 near Akasia.
Police say the suspect had argued with his girlfriend before shooting her, then killing two more people at a home in the Kanana section on Friday morning.
When police arrived on the scene, they too came under fire, and one officer was injured by shattered glass.
Two other women were also wounded in the dramatic shooting.
Police said the suspect fled the scene but was tracked down later after hijacking a vehicle.
"It is reported that, after he fled the scene, he abandoned and burned the vehicle he used to flee the scene between Ivory Park and Tembisa. He then hijacked an Avanza vehicle, of which the driver activated tracker," said Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.
She added that the motive for the attack remains unknown.
The three surviving victims are said to be receiving treatment in hospital.
