A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan on Monday morning.

Authorities have issued a tsunami warning for waves of up to three metres.

The quake was said to be strong enough to shake buildings as far away as Tokyo.

Officials have urged residents in coastal and riverside areas to evacuate immediately to higher ground, warning that tsunami waves could arrive quickly and may strike repeatedly.

A crisis management team has been set up by the Prime Minister’s office. Japan, located along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences frequent earthquakes.

Authorities remain on high alert as the situation develops.
