Masemola to appear in court after being linked to Medicare24 tender

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola is set to make his first court appearance after being linked to the irregular awarding of the controversial Medicare24 multimillion-rand tender.

The news of Masemola’s alleged involvement broke when tender tycoon Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and 14 police officers appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates Court in March.

They are accused of fraud, corruption and money laundering on the awarding of the tender, which Matlala would later be flagged for.

While the officers were granted bail of between R40,000 and R80,000, Masemola did not step into the dock with them.

When the news of Masemola's alleged involvement in the R360 million Medicare24 tender scandal broke, questions were asked about what role he is alleged to have played and what the charges against him are.

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia said Masemola has been charged with contravening the Public Finance Management Act and not corruption.

On Tuesday morning, Masemola will make his first court appearance, where his charges will be confirmed on record.

While he is the most senior officer to be charged in this case, he remains the country’s top cop, with a decision on his status expected after his appearance.
