Nine law enforcement officers are set to appear in court on Friday following their arrest by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, better known as the Hawks.
The officers face a range of serious charges, including corruption, extortion, and trespassing. According to police reports, members of the group allegedly abused their powers during a recent operation, demanding bribes from individuals to help them evade arrest.
Investigations into the group’s conduct revealed significant procedural violations. Hawks spokesperson, Katlego Mogale, noted that the officers were operating well outside their designated areas.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the police officers conducted a search in an area outside their jurisdiction. It was also discovered that four of these officers conducted a search while they were off duty.”
In addition to the recent operation, other officers within the group were processed for offences dating back to 2024. These arrests were the result of a specialised "around-the-clock" operation by the Serious Corruption Investigation unit.
Mogale confirmed that these specific charges stemmed from a formal complaint regarding a 2024 incident. As the investigation continues, the Hawks have indicated that more arrests are imminent.
