Tensions were high in Soweto on Saturday morning, where residents of the Diepkloof hostel took to the streets to protest over poor service delivery.
The frustrated residents blocked the N12 east and N1 north at the Diepkloof interchange with burning tyres and debris.
Two trucks were allegedly looted during the demonstration.
Police have since contained the situation but remain on high alert.
“The preliminary reason cited for the protest relates to ongoing service delivery issues within the Diepkloof hostel community,” said Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla.
“While the interchange and Chris Hani Road are being cleared, motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution when approaching these areas. If possible, please use alternative routes such as the Golden Highway or Rand Show Road.”
