The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities has expressed outrage over allegations against a Western Cape politician, charged with trafficking in persons, sexual exploitation of children and rape.

The accused, who is a member of the provincial legislature, was granted R15 000 bail in the George magistrate’s court.

The department asserts that this case undermines South Africa's efforts to combat gender-based violence and femicide, and it constitutes a breach of public trust.

Spokesperson Cassius Selala says the department is calling for a swift and transparent legal process, stressing that no one is above the law.

“The department reiterates that no one, regardless of status or position, should be above the law. Particularly in cases involving exploitation and abuse of women.”
