Power outage in Joburg CBD after central substation fire

A power outage has hit Johannesburg’s CBD and surrounding areas following a fire at a central substation on Saturday.

Affected areas include Marshalltown, Selby, as well as the Carlton Centre and the Standard Bank precinct.

Johannesburg City Power said the substation has been taken offline as a precaution. No injuries have been reported.

Spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the cause of the fire is still unknown and will be investigated.

“City Power teams are on standby and will commence with full technical assessment and the diagnostics as soon as access is granted. The extent of the damage and estimated time of restoration will only be determined after this assessment has been done.”
