Johannesburg motorists are being warned to be extra vigilant on the province’s roads as cold and wet conditions are expected to continue today, Sunday.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has forecast cooler temperatures, along with showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures are expected to drop to the low tens and rise only to the low twenties, with localised flooding possible in low-lying areas.
Joburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) is urging motorists and residents to avoid crossing low-lying bridges, rivers, and streams. Spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi has also advised parents to keep a close watch on children, especially near bodies of water.
“Motorists are still urged to continue to exercise caution while driving, extend the safe following distance, and try to avoid crossing flooded low-lying bridges,” Mulaudzi said.
The warning extends to residents in vulnerable areas who may be impacted by rising water levels.
“Our residents in our low-lying areas, especially our informal settlements, [are urged] to continue exercising caution, avoid crossing river streams while conducting daily activities, and monitor young kids to stay away from river streams,” Mulaudzi added.
