There is still a perception that the sport of golf is elitist, to be enjoyed only by wealthy, well-connected individuals.

The Let’s Golf movement was launched in April 2025 to challenge this misconception and make the sport more accessible and inclusive.

The aim is to make a day on the golf course a fun outing, not just for players but for people who want to spend a day out in a different environment, says co-founder and director Hloni Matlhare.

What began as a small, informal gathering of just four friends and a handful of spectators has evolved into one of Johannesburg’s most dynamic lifestyle and networking experiences.

"At its core, Let’s Golf is reshaping what a day on the golf course can look like.... The event has positioned itself as an inclusive, multi-layered experience designed for both seasoned golfers and complete beginners. It blends sport, social connection, and lifestyle in a way that breaks away from traditional perceptions of golf as exclusive or inaccessible."

They are bringing back the fun element into golf, says Matlhare.

"Golf is perceived as a sport for uptight, stuck-up people; so we're trying to change that narrative by making it more fun and less intimidating."

Matlhare emphasises that a Let's Golf event is for people of any skill level. For the beginners, they offer a golf clinic which is curated by PGA-certified professionals.

The emphasis is on fun, with various brands doing activations and big-name DJs spinning tracks.

However, the networking aspect of the sport is also at play, he says.

"What we're trying to do is build a network of black businesses around the sport of golf, so there are various networking opportunities."

To that end, Let's Golf is organising an expo scheduled for 1 August, which also brings in the tourism and hospitality sectors.

The next social event is happening on 2 May at the Jackal Creek golf estate.
