Cape Town band The Fantastics have just released their debut single One More Chance.

What makes this development even more exciting for the four young musicians, is that the track is a collaboration with one of South Africa's best-loved musicians, Dr. Victor (Victor Khojane) of Dr. Victor and the Rasta Rebels fame.

The quartet have been friends since their Bonteheuwel school days, starting out with performing at funerals and charity events, they tell Sara-Jane Makwala King.

Bass player and manager Jordan Lee Watt says Dr. Victor has always been his musical icon.

"He's like my musical dad and we're inspired by his craft and what he's contributed to the music industry."

Through Dr. Victor's decades-long friendship with his uncle, Jerry Watts from The Rockets, Jordan finally met up with his idol a few years ago, forging his own connection with him.

When he contacted the seasoned musician last year to say he thought it was time for The Fantastics to release something original, Dr. Victor suggested a song he'd penned as the perfect fit for the band's debut.

He'd been planning to keep One More Chance for himself for his next album, says Dr. Victor, but the opportunity it presented for the band changed his mind.

"I thought, no it's actually a little bit too youthful, so I contacted Jordan and said this will be a hit for you... It's about the breakup of a young romance and as the title suggests, just give me one more chance and let's reconcile."

The band flew up to Johannesburg to record with Dr. Victor, who says they did a great job in the studio, singling out in particular the performance of vocalist Ricklynn Groenwald, who doesn't have much studio experience.

Like Watts, Groenewald also has a strong musical heritage - his father was Ricardo, best known for his ballad I love you Daddy.

"I think Ricklynn got those genes", quips Dr. Victor.

The young vocalist says it has been a family dream for him to continue his father's legacy.
