6.2 magnitude earthquake hits Mid-Atlantic Ridge south of Cape Town

30 May 2025 | 10:33At 7.36 am on Friday, an earthquake struck near Bouvet Island, 2,272 km south-southwest of Cape Town.
Just after 7:30 am this morning, Peter Flentov, from The Atlantic Seaboard Community Forum on Facebook, shared a post alerting group members of an earthquake.
"At around 7:36 am this morning, there was an underwater earthquake along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, approximately 2,272 km south-southwest of Cape Town."
The quake, near Bouvet Island, measured 6.2 magnitude on the Richter scale.
The quake did not have much of an impact on the Atlantic Seaboard, and no tsunami warning has been issued.
Residents, however, may have noticed slight tremors.
